5 Questions with Stanford VP Charlette Stallworth

The Impact Pediatric Health (IPH) Pitch Competition at SXSW invited digital health and medical device startups to present to a panel of medical executives and investors. For Stanford Children’s Health, innovation is central to delivering extraordinary care, serving the brand’s academic mission, and fueling breakthrough discoveries.
The organization, located in Palo Alto, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area, embraces its role as an academic teaching hospital as part of Stanford University and believes collaboration and innovation are inherent to the ecosystem.

While in Austin we chatted with Charlette Stallworth, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, to hear more about her involvement as a judge of Impact Pediatric Health 2018, and how she and her colleagues are proactively seeking solutions to universal pain points across the pediatric care landscape to advance the future of care for all children.

In December you opened a new patient-centered facility, doubling the size of the hospital. What are the key goals for the facility, and how is your team planning to measure brand impact?

The primary reason for growing our hospital was a response to patient demand. By adding over 500,000 square feet of space to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford we are able to care for more patients than ever before. Having the opportunity to design and build a facility from the ground up allowed us to envision a hospital like no other, with a goal of redefining the patient family experience.

At a high level, we’ll look to three metrics to determine the impact to our brand: 1) The number of patients we are able to serve; 2) Our ability to improve the hospital experience for patients and their families; and 3) Overall brand perception in the market.

When looking for strategic partners, what role does an organization’s brand and reputation play? What are you looking for?

To understand what we look for in our partnerships, we begin with our position as the Bay Area’s only healthcare network exclusively dedicated to caring for children and expectant mothers. Through our network, Stanford Children’s Health provides a backbone of pediatric critical care throughout our region and beyond. This guides our vision for strategic partnerships that enhance our ability to provide access to excellent healthcare to children and expectant mothers. These partners include hospitals and healthcare systems, and collaborations with corporations and startups from other industries. We seek alignment in values and remain open to the new and unconventional.

Why is participating in the Impact Pediatric (IPH) Startup Pitch Competition at SXSW and investing in innovation important to Stanford Children’s? What were you looking for during the pitches?

Creating connections between innovators, healthcare experts and investors to focus on pediatric care needs is incredibly important. The pediatric population is often underserved because the patient population is much smaller than the adult population. Pediatric medical device technology often lags five to ten years behind technology for adults due to economic challenges related to market size.

I was looking for coherent, actionable innovation along with engaged leadership. Additionally, each company was judged according to specific criteria determined by IPH. The competition was divided into three sections: medical device, digital health, and global health. Ten companies pitched their innovations to the panel and attendees. The judges selected a winner for each section, and each of them had compelling pediatric products, which merit additional support.

What does it take to be a leading brand in pediatrics?

Pediatrics is all about specialized dedication to the unique needs of the pediatric population. We often say, “kids are not little adults”—their care needs require expertise that is absolutely essential to successful outcomes. Our exclusive focus on pediatric and obstetric care means that every provider has this focus and dedication.

As the pediatric teaching hospital for Stanford University School of Medicine, we are uniquely positioned to be leaders; our doctors are advancing research and clinical care practices and leading the next generation of providers. Through our network of and partnerships we are expanding access to excellent care. And through a culture that encourages and fosters innovation and collaboration, we are shaping the future of pediatric care.

IPH is made up of eight of the country’s leading children’s hospitals. We are all committed to advancing innovation for pediatric care to improve children’s health everywhere.

What will it take to lead change in the future?

In order to lead change, Stanford Children’s Health provides access to excellent pediatric care enhanced by research, clinical trials and innovation. We know one thing for sure, the way we deliver care today, won’t look the same five years from now. Technology, and the ways we use data and interact with patients, will evolve and it takes concerted dedication to be drivers of that change.

One of our priorities now that will perhaps have some of the greatest impacts on the future of care is harnessing digital health and how we can leverage wearables, telehealth, virtual reality and other groundbreaking technologies to support patients and their families.
